Amniotic membranes are like small bandages (similar to contact lenses) for the surface of the eye that promote healing when other treatments have failed.
The membranes are harvested from the placentas of mothers who deliver their babies via cesarean section. The process of harvesting and processing the tissues is tightly regulated. Donors are thoroughly screened for communicable diseases such as HIV, hepatitis, and syphilis, and the tissues are cleaned with a mixture of balanced salt solutions and antibiotics.
These membranes dissolve on the surface of the eye within 24 to 48 hours.
If you've been dealing with dry eye symptoms that haven't improved with other treatments, amniotic membranes may be the right solution for you. To learn more about this treatment and see if it's right for you, feel free to contact our office at 954-999-5592.
